about

In July 2021, my younger son and were sitting in the hammock in our backyard listening to the cicadas – turns out cicadas have very different calls from one region to the next: the ones we have here in southern Ontario are Neotibicen Canicularis or "dog day" cicadas – and we started talking about different bugs: Big green cicada buzz buzz, Big daddy longlegs step step, Little black cricket creak creak... etc. and suddenly a song took shape. If you look closely though, for some reason all those phrases are in 5/8 time, and so that is the meter I used.

lyrics

Big green cicada buzz buzz
Buzz buzz big green cicada

Little black cricket creak creak
Creak creak little black cricket

All the bugs in my garden
Sharing the work together

Big daddy longlegs step step
Step step big daddy longlegs

Big long pink earthworm wiggle
Wiggle big long pink earthworm

All the bugs in my garden
Sharing the work together

Orange butterfly flutter
Flutter orange butterfly

Little red ladybug crawl
Crawl little red ladybug

All the bugs in my garden
Sharing the work together

Little potato bug roll
Roll little potato bug
